Katy Perry and Gayle King Just Went to Space—And Made History Doing It
Singer Katy Perry and journalist Gayle King took a seriously out-of-this-world trip on Monday—literally. They were part of a group of six women who hopped aboard a Blue Origin spaceflight for a quick adventure beyond Earth’s atmosphere
Grateful to Blue Origin : Blue Origin Launch
The launch took place at Blue Origin’s private site in West Texas, and while it only lasted a few minutes, it was more than just a joyride. It marked the first all-female civilian crew to travel to space since 1963—a pretty incredible milestone.
Alongside Perry and King were five other powerhouse women: Amanda Nguyen, a fearless civil rights activist; Aisha Bowe, who used to design rockets for NASA; Kerianne Flynn, a filmmaker with an eye for the extraordinary; and Lauren Sánchez, an Emmy-winning journalist who also happens to be engaged to Blue Origin founder Jeff Bezos.
Once the rocket—fittingly named New Shepard after astronaut Alan Shepard—blasted off, the women floated more than 60 miles above Earth, crossing what’s known as the Kármán Line, the official edge of space. For a few magical minutes, they experienced weightlessness and got to see Earth from a view that most of us can only dream of—through huge windows designed to soak in the awe.
Then, like something out of a sci-fi movie, the capsule gently parachuted back down to Earth. The reusable rocket booster even landed itself like a pro, thanks to some very smart autonomous tech.
This was the 31st launch for New Shepard and the 11th time it’s carried people. Since Blue Origin started flying humans in 2021 (yes, Bezos was on that first one), the spaceflights have included a mix of celebrities and civilians—people like William Shatner and Michael Strahan have also taken the ride.
But this crew? They made history. Not just for where they went, but for who they are—strong, inspiring women from different walks of life, boldly stepping into a space that’s traditionally been anything but diverse.
It’s a reminder that space isn’t just for astronauts anymore—and the future is looking a whole lot more inclusive.
